Roof Warranty Guide
A roof warranty is not often presented as a headline feature, but rarely explained in a way that makes decision-making easier. A roofing warranty is not one single document. It is typically made up of several layers of protection, each responsible for a different type of issue.
Most roof replacements include contractor workmanship coverage, manufacturer material coverage, and in some cases manufacturer-backed extended protection. This guide explains how roof warranties actually work, how responsibility is defined, and how Pak Exteriors structures warranty protection to provide meaningful coverage without unnecessary complexity.
How Roofing Warranties Are Structured
Manufacturer Material Warranty
Every asphalt shingle roof includes a manufacturer material warranty. This warranty applies only if roofing materials contain a verified manufacturing defect.
Examples may include: premature shingle failure caused by production defects, adhesion or sealing failure unrelated to installation, and abnormal material deterioration confirmed by the manufacturer.
These warranties are commonly described as "limited lifetime," automatically included, and limited specifically to manufacturing defects. Standard manufacturer warranties typically cover materials only. Labor to remove and replace defective shingles is usually included only during the manufacturer's non-prorated coverage period or when an extended warranty has been registered.
Contractor Workmanship Warranty
A workmanship warranty covers how the roofing system was installed. This includes: flashing integration, fastening patterns, sealing details, penetration waterproofing, ventilation design, and system transitions.
This warranty holds the installing contractor accountable for construction quality.
Most installation-related concerns appear within the first several years after installation, which is why clearly defined accountability during this period provides meaningful protection.
Manufacturer-Backed Extended Warranty
Some manufacturers allow certified contractors to register enhanced warranty protection. When a complete roofing system is installed and registered correctly, the manufacturer may provide labor coverage for verified manufacturing defects and secondary protection beyond contractor-only coverage. Some manufacturers also include manufacturer-backed workmanship protection. At our certification levels, GAF and Owens Corning offer this, while others cover labor on material defects only.
Manufacturer-backed workmanship protection is not available from all manufacturers. At our certification levels, GAF and Owens Corning include workmanship coverage in their extended warranties. Other manufacturers cover labor on material defects but do not extend coverage to installation errors.
Not every contractor is authorized to offer these warranties. Eligibility depends on manufacturer certification and proper system installation.
Our Warranty Structure
We intentionally keep our warranty structure simple and clearly defined. Every full roof replacement installed by Pak Exteriors includes:
- 10 years of workmanship coverage backed directly by Pak Exteriors
- Paired with the manufacturer's limited lifetime material warranty
- Installation-related issues remain our responsibility
- Manufacturing defects remain the manufacturer's responsibility
Workmanship-related concerns typically reveal themselves early in a roof's service life. Our goal is clarity, not complexity.
Schedule a ConsultationManufacturer-Backed Extended Warranty
For homeowners who prefer an additional layer of protection, we offer a manufacturer-backed extended warranty option. This includes:
- Builds on the manufacturer’s standard warranty
- Includes labor coverage for verified manufacturing defects
- With some manufacturers, provides manufacturer-backed workmanship protection (see our Certifications & Accreditations page for which manufacturers include this)
- Adds secondary protection alongside contractor-backed coverage (coverage details vary by manufacturer)
Pak Exteriors maintains certifications across seven major manufacturers. At our certification levels, GAF and Owens Corning include manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage in their extended warranties. Other manufacturers provide extended labor coverage on material defects but not workmanship. We can walk you through what each option includes for your specific project.
While these programs are available, we do not typically recommend them as a default upgrade. Properly installed roofing systems perform reliably within the standard accountability period, and longer timelines do not always provide proportional real-world value.
Does a Roof Warranty Cover Hail or Storm Damage?
Roof warranties cover manufacturing defects and installation-related conditions. Storm damage such as hail or falling debris is typically handled through homeowner insurance rather than warranty claims.
This distinction is one of the most common sources of confusion for homeowners in Colorado. If you suspect storm damage, contact your insurance provider, not your warranty administrator.
How We Think About Warranty Value
A strong warranty is not defined by the longest timeline printed on paper. Meaningful protection includes:
- Clearly defined responsibility
- Labor coverage where it matters
- Realistic timeframes
- A contractor committed to long-term service
The goal is confidence, not confusion.
Because Pak Exteriors maintains manufacturer certifications across multiple major roofing systems, we regularly evaluate how warranties perform in real claim situations, not just how they are marketed at the time of installation.

If a Warranty Issue Comes Up, What Happens?
If you believe a warranty-related issue exists, here is exactly what the process looks like.
You Call Us First
We inspect the concern and determine whether it involves workmanship, material performance, or conditions unrelated to warranty coverage.
We Determine Responsibility
If workmanship-related, we correct it directly, on our dime. If it's a verified material concern, we coordinate with the manufacturer and guide the process on your behalf.
You're Never Left Alone
You are never left interpreting warranty documents alone. We handle the paperwork, the manufacturer communication, and the resolution process on your behalf.

Don't Take Our Word For It
“Eric and his outstanding team @ Pak Roof did a great job helping us resolve our gutter flashing and heat tape problems! Eric put us on his schedule promptly and identified the issues, then, working with the best resources, got the project done in short order. Everyone involved was professional, timely and easy to communicate with. They took and shared photos, and after the installation, even gave us an in-person tutorial of how the much improved heat-tape and thermostat works. Hard to imagine these days, but doing business with them was actually a pleasure!”
