A simple pro tip to stop storm-chasing roofers from knocking after a hail storm — plus a free printable “We Have A Roofer” sign you can tape to your door today.
After a big hail storm rolls through Colorado, it usually doesn't take long for the door-knocking to start. Roofers you've never heard of show up uninvited, ring the bell, and push you to sign something on the spot. Here's the easiest way we've found to make it stop.
The pro tip: put a sign on your door
The best way we've found to get roofing contractors to stop knocking is simple: put a sign on your door — written in pen or Sharpie — that says “Please don't knock. I already have a roofer.” Even if that's not technically true yet, it works. Door-knockers are looking for homeowners who haven't committed to anyone. A handwritten note tells them to move on to the next house.
“Do Not Knock — We Have A Roofer” sign
Print it on regular paper and tape it up. Handwritten green-Sharpie style, ready to go — no design work needed.
One more tip: use painter’s tape
When you hang it, use painter's tape — the blue kind. It won't pull your stain or paint, and it won't leave a residue on your door.
When you're actually ready, get an honest look at your roof
If hail came through, we recommend having someone you trust take a look — someone who will tell you whether or not you have damage, and just as importantly, whether you don't. Not someone who's going to create damage or talk you into a claim you don't need.
We'd love to be that person for you. We do a video inspection: we film the inspection and narrate what we're looking at, so we talk you through the damage, how hail creates it, and why your insurance company might pay for it. That way you're educated enough to decide on your own whether it's worth filing a claim.
